The Broken Spoon:
Training Tutors to Develop Independent Learning Skills in Students
 Available On-Demand

"Using interactive teaching techniques in the classroom or the tutoring center is a little like eating cheerios with chopsticks—frustrating at first for everyone!  But if the student is to remember the information, then the teacher and tutor must avoid spoonfeeding the student by doing all the work—all the talking, all the writing, all the thinking.  You’ve got to break the spoon!

Overview

The speaker will introduce participants to the Broken Spoon campaign, an approach to tutoring that underscores independent learning.  One of the battles of a learning center is to convince faculty that the tutors do not “spoon feed” students, as in teaching to the test, providing full outlines, and emphasizing quick memory tricks over a thorough understanding.  To counter, our center launched training and marketing to highlight the benefits of interactive tutoring methods that short-circuit any growing dependence on the tutor.

This webinar will prepare participants to develop their own Broken Spoon campaign, allowing them not only to win over faculty but also to ground their  tutor training program in the most important skill they can offer their clients:  the process of learning how to learn.
