The Structure of Developmental Education:
Creating Programs That Facilitate the Success of Unprepared Students
  Available On-Demand

Overview

This sharply-focused, comprehensive session on all aspects of developmental program structure, both academic and organizational, will emphasize and describe in detail programmatic features and delivery models that can facilitate the success of unprepared students.  A historic perspective on the topic will frame all information, defining the field, establishing its function in higher education, explaining how its role and underlying philosophy have evolved over time, and identifying program components tied to success, from the reporting structure of developmental education to student performance patterns, policies and practices, advisement, academic support, faculty training, assessment, and resources.

Since developmental education affects all undergraduate programs and holds implications for a variety of university services, such as financial aid and tutoring, the session is designed to meet the needs of all campus stakeholders: administrators, department heads, academic support and student services staff, and faculty.   The presenter will therefore methodically examine the features of developmental education program structure from the views, needs, and expectations of these various groups, concentrating on likely goals in order to build a comprehensive organizational model.

Aiming to edify the audience and move them to action in the field, the session will be particularly beneficial to those institutions currently assessing or reviewing an existing developmental education program, preparing for an institutional accreditation visit, considering the creation of a developmental education program, or restructuring a developmental education program that is not successful.  This is an issues-based seminar, a consultancy in the field with suggestions for sustainable, organizational approaches for meeting students’ needs.  The session will inspire the audience to reflect on their organizational goals and facilitate development of an action plan to meet these.

Who is the speaker?

Dr. Linda Best is Professor and Chair of the Department of English at Kean University in Union, NJ.  She earned her Ed.D. from the University of Rochester (NY) in the area of cognition and instruction.  She also directs the Kean University Writing Project, an approved site of the federally-funded National Writing Project, the largest and most successful professional development program for teachers in the United States.

Dr. Best has been active in the field of Developmental Education since its inception and has focused on workable systems and structures to support student success in both her research and writing.  She has presented on the re-structuring of education for student success at the International Conferences of the National Center for Research on Developmental Education, NoeLevitz conferences, and Annual Conferences of the College Reading and Learning Association.  Her administrative experiences in the field and related areas include the following positions at Kean University, Union, NJ:  Chair, Department of English; Director, General Education; Coordinator, Developmental Education; and Director, English as a Second Language Program.

Dr. Best is most widely known for her critical studies on the nature of developmental writing, which support her work to develop materials that facilitate students’ progress, elevate their learning and esteem, offer authentic content, engage them in the deep suprocesses of writing (e.g., planning, monitoring, questioning, reviewing, and so on), integrate grammar into writing practice, lend themselves to active learning, and support the retention and application of writing skills for use in other academic situations.  This writing falls within the broad framework of developmental education structure and mission for student success and reflects Dr. Best’s role in the revision and integration of Developmental Education and General Education at Kean University.

Dr. Best has participated in nation-wide studies in developmental education focusing on topics like student absences, limited engagement, lack of motivation, low self-esteem, and the tendency to work toward minimum standards rather than excellence.  She has served as an external evaluator at a number of institutions and has delivered well over 100 professional development sessions. Her work has transformed developmental writing into a thoughtful, critically-informed, and affirming process for both teachers and their students.
