Latino Parent Involvement in College Access and Success:
Developing Culturally Relevant Resources
Available On-Demand

"Parents remain an untapped resource with incredible potential for increasing the educational outcomes of first generation and underrepresented students. Recognizing and building upon forms of familial and community cultural wealth is an essential step in involving students’ families and in developing culturally relevant college planning and preparation resources and outreach. Including students’ families will extend the base of support for postsecondary access, persistence and achievement."

Overview

Latino parents have high aspirations for their children to go to college. However, parents, who did not have the opportunity to go to college themselves, have deeply felt the need for basic information, including that which will help them to understand the salient differences between types of institutions, admissions requirements, and financial aid. Lack of college knowledge, structural barriers, language barriers, and unfamiliarity with the U.S. education system make it especially challenging for many Latino parents to help their children prepare for and persist in college.

This webinar will focus on the unique role of parents in college preparation, planning and success with an emphasis on Latino families.  Participants will learn about research on the role of parental involvement in college access and success, and recommendations for developing culturally relevant resources.  Participants will also receive a set of parent workshop materials in both English and Spanish that can be adapted for different uses.

Objectives

  • Overview of research on the key determinants of college access
  • The critical role of parents in college preparation, planning and success
  • What parents need to know about getting their children into college

  • Asset mapping exercise: identifying existing institutional and community resources that can be used in parental outreach efforts
