Overview

There are currently nearly 1.8 million living women military veterans in this country and over 103,000 have been deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Women in the military and most especially those deployed to an operation where they may be exposed to combat, creates unique issues and concerns on college campuses.  The first half of this webinar will be an in-depth exploration of those issues and concerns that seem to be gender specific for the women veterans returning to college campuses.

In the second half, Supportive Education for the Returning Veteran (SERV) will provide insight into what today's women veterans need, and how to create and run an effective women veterans program. SERV will provide the background information from women veteran peer support personnel so that campuses will know what some women go through while they are in the military and the impact it has on their beliefs, fears, expectations and overall transition to the college campus. This data is critical to understanding the gender specific physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and spiritual (P.C.E.B.S.) reactions women veterans bring to your college campus.

Objectives

Campus personnel will, through in-depth awareness of the normal (PCEBS) responses to military veteran's experience, learn how to:
  • reach women veterans through appropriate program development and support
  • understand the dynamics of normal human responses to abnormal life events (such as military service and deployment to combat operations)
  • explain many of the unique behaviors such as isolationism and secretiveness that are prevalent among this population of veterans

Who Should Attend?

All persons in charge of women's programs, women's centers and veteran programs on college campuses, as well as faculty and staff who are interested in creating a military friendly and efficient culture on their campus.

Who are the speakers?

Roger P. Buck., Ph.D.   is a licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, a Doctoral Addictions Counselor and a retired U.S. Navy Veteran. He earned a Ph.D. in Counseling and Human Development Services from Kent State University in August 1998, an M.Ed. in Community Counseling from Georgia State University in March 1984, and a  B.A. in Psychology from the University of Toledo in June 1975.  Dr. Buck has extensive advanced training and research in human responses to Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  He also has extensive experience as a counselor, teacher, consultant and administrator spanning a twenty five year career.

Dr. John Schupp founded the SERV Program, a two-semester program at Cleveland State University designed just for veterans.  These two semesters are just what the veterans needed to increase the freshmen retention graduation rates.  Under his direction, the program helps veterans apply for GI bill benefits and offers veterans-only classes that help ease the transition back into the classroom for many veterans who have not been in a classroom for years. He works with the veterans to navigate VA issues and offers a veteran-to-veteran mentoring program.  The Sunday New York Times, the National Public radio, all the armed forces media, and the Chronicle of Higher Education have taken an interest in SERV.  John Schupp loses no chance to spread the word at conferences and conventions around the country, as he continues to remind us of our responsibility to those who've served.
