"As the Internships Manager, I truly enjoyed assisting students through the process of creating a resume and cover letter and watching them grow through their internship experience.  Many of the students have gone on to full-time jobs and have stated that their internship experience gave them the leg up they needed to pursue that full-time position.  I enjoy sharing what we learned with other colleges to assist them in creating a program that will help their students succeed in the work world."

 ~ Lisa S. Kelsay, Ph.D.
 Assistant Dean of Liberal Arts
 Moraine Valley Community College

Overview

In this economy, a foot in the door is a great career move. In 2001, a group of individuals at Moraine Valley Community College (IL) recognized this and began to create a process to assist students in gaining that all important hands-on experience.  In the summer 2004, the Internship Program began and five years later is assisting students in many different fields to apply what they are learning in the classroom in a real world environment.

Join us and learn the step by step process that we used to build an innovative internship program from scratch.  Participants will take away practical information (including what we learned along the way) and specific strategies that they can use to create and maintain an internship program at their institutions.

Objectives

Participants will:
  • Learn how Moraine Valley Community College built an internship program from scratch
  • Discover how this program helps students to succeed
  • Explore what the faculty and staff at MVCC learned in the first five years of the program
  • Take away steps that can be applied at their own college to create and maintain an internship program

Who Should Attend?
  • Community College Administrators in Career Services or related office
  • Student Services/Affairs administration
  • Academic Affairs Administrators and faculty who work in a program who might offer an internship experience
