“Encourage your tutors to implement the Appreciative Tutoring Cycle in their sessions! The framework provides an
opportunity to maximize student potential, encourage strategic and independent thinking, and emphasize the
student’s strengths as tools for learning!”
~ Jenna Grogan
Webinar Presenter
Overview
The Appreciative Tutoring Cycle blends the principles of Appreciative Advising (2008) with MacDonald’s (2000) Tutoring Cycle, creating a useful framework for tutors to utilize during their sessions. There are six flexible phases in the Appreciative Tutoring Cycle, including Welcome, Identify, Prioritize, Apply, Confirm, and Foster Independence. An overview of each phase, including examples, will be provided throughout the webinar. Essentially, a tutor’s ultimate goal is to help students learn academic content and develop strategies for future assignments. The Appreciative Tutoring Cycle facilitates the students’ learning process, emphasizing their strengths and fostering their independence.
