Who is the speaker?

Dr. Paz M. Olivérez is a Program Analyst for the Educational Policy Unit of the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education where she is involved in several research projects related to educational equity and closing the achievement gap for urban Latino and African American students.  Prior to working with the LAUSD, Dr. Olivérez spent six years as a research assistant at the University of Southern California investigating issues of college access, persistence, and financial aid for low-income first-generation college-goers.  Through this work she developed first-hand expertise regarding the challenges encountered by college-ready undocumented students as they endeavor to pursue higher education.  Her dissertation titled Ready But Restricted: An Examination of the Challenges of College Access and Financial Aid for Undocumented Students in the U.S. offers valuable insight into the challenges encountered by ten college-ready undocumented high school seniors as they endeavored to make the transition from high school to college.

Dr. Olivérez continues to be a strong advocate for college-ready undocumented immigrant students through her work with California’s Undocumented Student College Access Network.  Along with a statewide coalition of undocumented students and advocates, she was instrumental in developing The College and Financial Aid Guide for AB540 Undocumented Immigrant Students which has been disseminated to thousands of undocumented students and advocates throughout CaliforniaDr. Olivérez holds a Ph.D. in Education Policy from the University of Southern California and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

How do these on-demand trainings work?

1.  We will send you a link to the recording, which is good indefinitely.

2.  You can distribute this link to your entire faculty and staff via email.

3.  They can watch this presentation from any computer that has Internet and speakers.

How would I use it?

You can distribute the links any way you like.   Here are some ideas:

  • Distribute all links to faculty and staff so they can watch these presentations anytime, anywhere and have a discussion board for each topic
  • Distribute one link to all faculty and staff at the beginning of each month during the academic year and plan a discussion session at the end of each month for faculty and staff to get together and plan how they will implement the strategies presented
  • Plan a day and time to show each webinar in a large classroom and invite all faculty and staff to attend - debrief immediately following the presentation
  • Develop a professional development program around these topics with monthly themes and recognize the staff member that implements the best idea related to the theme
  • Utilize these topics to develop cross functional and cross discipline teams to foster collegiality
  • Utilize these presentations as part of your new employee training program
