“Millennial students can be difficult to engage, but once you are able to connect there is not a more passionate, dedicated generation out there. The challenge, for student affairs staff and faculty, is to find a way to connect with these students.”

Overview
Much has been written in recent years about the challenges of working with millennial students in the classroom, residence halls and within administrative offices such as the registrar, financial aid and academic affairs. Millennial students have a unique way of seeing the world and often have high expectations of how others should work for them. This generation has the distinction of being seen as hard to work with and engage, while at the same time being extremely passionate and technologically savvy. This seminar is designed to help faculty and staff better understand and motivate millennial students in and out of the classroom.

The Seven Steps:
  • Wanted and Loved: Understanding the characteristics of the Millennial students
  • It takes a village: Past experiences drive future behavior
  • The Crux: Enabling vs. Caring
  • Finding the Key: How to unlock their potential
  • Conflict and Expectations: Balancing accountability with flexibility
  • Parents: What to do with them
  • Classroom Tips: Teaching Creatively

Objectives
Participants will:
  • Explore the definition of the Millennial student and learn why they see the world the way they do
  • Understand how to connect with Millennial students and engage them in the task at hand
  • Learn ways to uphold the standards (academic and administrative) in a way that shows caring rather than enabling
  • Receive practical advice on how to work with Millennial students you may be in conflict with
