Overview

Looking for your first job after college can be stressful, especially if students are not prepared.  Institutions of higher education need to help their students prepare now to job search later.  This workshop will show students how to create a more effective cover letter and resume that will stand out to potential employers.   Students will learn how to organize the information, be concise, utilize effective action verbs and express themselves in a professional and effective manner.

Objectives


Students will learn to:

  • Use the cover letter and resume to relate their education, experiences and achievements in a professional and effective manner
  • Tailor their resume to different types of jobs
  • Organize the essential information
  • Utilize effective action verbs
  • Prepare a powerful resume that will distinguish themselves from other candidates

 

Who is the presenter?

George Hoey, career services professional for the past 11 years-initially as the Student Affairs Career Development Coordinator and currently as Chief Diversity Officer for the office of Career Services at CU Boulder;  administrator in higher education for 25-plus years; undergraduate and graduate degrees from The University of Michigan's School of Education-teacher education and Guidance and Counseling respectively; presented to thousands of undergraduate students, alumni, faculty and staff on career topics over the years; directed Academic Support Programs at The University of Michigan and the University of Colorado for student-athletes; participated as a college and professional athlete; two-time hometown Sports Hall of Fame inductee (Flint, MI)
