Dr. John Schupp, Creator and Director of SERV (Supportive Education for the Returning Veteran) at Cleveland State University, is a Chemistry Instructor at the university with a passionate concern for veterans, most especially those pursuing degrees in higher education. John earned a Ph.D. in Structural Chemistry from Cleveland State University and worked in the synthetic crystal industry for 25 years. During that time he received five patents for high volume, large diameter crystal manufacturing processes and served as CEO for two different companies.
The idea for SERV arose in 2006 as John worked with a chemistry student who had served in a military assignment in Kosovo and who discussed her difficulties in making the transition from military to civilian life. He began work on the design of the SERV program and received university funding in 2007. SERV is a very successful, nationally-recognized program that has been featured on National Public Radio; presented at the ACE Summit at Georgetown University and the AMVETS National Convention; featured in Inside Higher Education (July 10, 2008); and many other national outlets and venues.
John Schupp has received the Humanitarian of the Year award from the Dept of Defense. His work and SERV in particular provide an outstanding model for colleges and universities to emulate as they seek ways to make their institutions veteran friendly and as they design programs and services that will cause returning veterans to find success in the academic communities.
