Overview:
There is ongoing debate as to whether students are better off with tenured faculty or adjunct faculty. Research suggests that adjunct faculty risk burnout due to emotional and physical exhaustion. Also suggested is that they are underprepared for the classroom and today’s students. How do we address these issues for this important group? Most institutions have an orientation night for faculty the first week of the semester. However, these orientations typically hit just the tip of the iceberg, addressing college policies and procedures but never delving into the important issues and questions about the classroom.

We have heard that being an adjunct can be lonely and isolating, not to mention intimidating. Who wants to admit they are not prepared? The EDGE Program is a professional development learning community for new adjunct faculty members (with less than three years of experience). This program prepares the instructor for all aspects of the teaching experience. Set up as a hybrid format, which is a blend of in-person and online, the course spans over five weeks and reminds the instructor what it is like to be a student in today’s classroom. It covers topics relevant to their everyday life. It also allows them to network with others who are new to teaching. Participants in this webinar will learn how to develop and design a similar course at their institutions.
