Description Speaker(s)

Overview:
Ensuring students stay in school and earn their degrees is a significant challenge for most colleges and universities. Nationally, a staggering 44 percent of students who start four-year degrees do not graduate within six years and 71 percent of those who start two-year degrees do not graduate within three years.

In this webinar, speakers will review findings that show that success in college takes more than academic skills. Over the past several decades, research has demonstrated the importance of non-cognitive factors such as time management, motivation, self-efficacy, and social connections to student success. However, standard admissions and placement tests don’t paint a full picture. An institution needs to understand incoming students’ strengths and vulnerabilities or whether they are motivated to persevere and succeed. More importantly, they must tie that information to institutional action in a comprehensive and systematic way. Participants will learn how institutions have successfully used non-cognitive assessments to connect students to the resources they need and improve rates of success.
Objectives:
  • Understand the student success agenda
  • Learn about the research that points to the importance of non-cognitive factors in assessment
  • Discover how holistic assessment can drive success rates
  • Explore the challenges to implementing holistic assessment in their own institutions

  • Acquire the tools to improve their own institutions’ retention and success rates
