Description Speaker(s)

Overview:
The steps for learning anything—chemistry, trigonometry, history—are the same for learning anything else—video games, sports, music. In fact, the basic steps for learning are as elementary as riding a bike. The brain needs the same steps to occur in all instances in order to store the information in long-term memory. Teachers and tutors know the importance of taking the time to incorporate these learning strategies into the content. Otherwise, both the instructor and the student may fool themselves into thinking learning has occurred when really only a superficial memorization of facts has amassed for short-term retention.

This webinar focuses not only on the learning strategies that have proven to be most effective for cognition, but also on affective learning such as self-efficacy and locus of control, which truly determine whether a student will engage in the learning or not. Participants will walk away with strategies they can use to help students succeed.
Objectives:
  • Learn strategies that will motivate students to engage in learning
  • Discuss the importance of affective learning (e.g. self-efficacy, locus of control)
  • Explore learning strategies that have proven to be most effective for cognition

  • Identify how to incorporate these strategies into the tutoring session & classroom lectures
