Description Speaker(s)

Overview:
At many colleges and universities, the number of students with Aspergerís Disorder continues to increase. While these students have the intellectual abilities to be successful, they often struggle with understanding social cues and comprehending unwritten rules and procedures. They may be teased or laughed at by other students. As a result, these students pose unique challenges to faculty members, administrators, and other students during their college careers. Working successfully with Aspergerís students requires an understanding of their behavior and knowledge of how to communicate with them.

In this webinar, Brian Van Brunt, Ed.D., will offer recommendations for helping these students succeed. Participants will better understand the behaviors and needs of students with Aspergerís Disorder. They will also learn strategies to build awareness, understanding, empathy, and tolerance in the classroom and campus-wide.
Objectives:
  • Understand the various departments and locations where students with Aspergerís Disorder may come into conflict
  • Better understand students with Aspergerís Disorder, including their behaviors and needs
  • Learn strategies to build understanding, empathy, and tolerance when communicating with other students about Aspergerís Disorder
  • Come away with an improved understanding of how to better communicate with Aspergerís students so they can focus on course content (faculty) and ultimately help these students succeed (advisors, student services staff, other students)
