Description
Daily reports of international terrorism, emergent diseases, criminal acts, natural disasters, etc have created a heightened sense of uncertainty around the world. In order to keep study abroad students and staff safe and minimize the risk of liability, it is critical that study abroad administrators fully appreciate the risks and be aware of the repertoire of options that are available for keeping informed, for reducing your exposures and for mitigating the effects of incidents when they do occur. Who are the Speakers?
Bill Frederick has been the Director of Risk Management Services at The School for Field Studies for the past 3 years. In that capacity he has conducted a number of international study abroad safety reviews. He has also created a Risk Assessment and Risk Management Decision Making workshop and helped facilitate the creation of a collaborative International Health and Safety Course. He comes from an Adventure Education background having served for 18 years as an instructor, technical specialist and program director for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. He has also worked for a number of other Outward Bound Schools as well as the National Outdoor Leadership School. As a senior instructor for Wilderness Medical Associates he has taught emergency medicine courses in Iceland, Belgium, South Africa, Mexico, Costa Rica, Turks and Caicos, Kenya, Australia, Finland, Taiwan and throughout the U.S. He holds a B.A in Psychology from the University of Colorado and a M.Ed from Harvard University.
Natalie A. Mello is the Director of Global Operations in the Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Mello oversees all aspects of the administration and management of WPI’s global perspective program, including student recruitment, risk management, health and safety issues, participant orientation and faculty advisor training. These programs exist in the following locations: London, England; San José, Costa Rica; Venice, Italy; Goddard Space Flight Center, MD; Limerick, Ireland; Nancy, France; Modesto, CA; Silicon Valley, CA; Bangkok, Thailand; Washington, DC; Budapest, Hungary; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Copenhagen, Denmark; Boston, MA; Windhoek, Namibia; and Melbourne, Australia.
Mello is involved with national study abroad organizations particularly in the areas of risk management and has become recognized as developing a model for responsible risk management for off-campus experiences. She has recently contributed to NAFSA’s Guide to Education Abroad for Advisers and Administrators, Third Edition. She is a member of the NAFSA Trainer Corp and has delivered PDP and other workshops to professionals in the field of education abroad dealing with issues of health and safety, risk management and faculty preparation for education abroad. She has published articles about assessment in education abroad, most recently in Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad. (Vol. X. 2004). Mello has been active in several professional associations (NAFSA, The Forum, American Society of Engineering Education and Frontiers in Education) and presents regularly at these conferences.
Mello received her BA degree in studio art from Connecticut College in 1984. After graduation, she served in the Peace Corps in Central America. Mello lived in Belize and Costa Rica before returning to the US in 1987. She earned a Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language in 1990, and completed her Masters of Liberal Arts in 1993 at Clark University.
