This webinar is designed to help faculty, learning center professionals, and student affairs personnel develop strategies to help students become independent, self-directed learners.  A discussion of the characteristics of todayís students will help participants understand why many students lack effective learning strategies when they enroll in college, and how simple it is to teach them strategies for successful learning.

Who is the speaker?

Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire is the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Learning and Teaching, and Professor of Chemistry at Louisiana State University.  She is the former director of LSUís nationally recognized Center for Academic Success.  Prior to joining LSU in August, 1999, she spent eleven years at Cornell University, where she served as Acting Director of the Center for Learning and Teaching and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry.   While at Cornell she received the highly coveted Clark Distinguished Teaching Award. 


Dr. McGuire has been teaching chemistry and working in the area of learning assistance for the past 35 years, and has previously held academic appointments at The State University of New York, Brockport; The University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and Alabama A & M University in  Huntsville.   The basic techniques and strategies she has presented at over 75 institutions on Teaching Students How to Learn have contributed to the increased success of numerous students from diverse economic backgrounds, developmental levels, and with widely varying learning styles. 


Dr. McGuire has been the recipient of numerous awards.  Two of her most recent awards are attaining Level 4 lifetime learning center leadership certification from the National College Learning Center Association in 2010 and receiving the 2006 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring, awarded by President Bush in a White House Oval Office Ceremony.


Dr. McGuire received her B.S. degree, magna cum laude, from Southern University, Baton Rouge, LA; her masterís degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; and her Ph.D. in Chemical Education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she received the Chancellorís Citation for Exceptional Professional Promise.
