Description Speaker(s)

Overview:
Few topics in academic advising are more debated than the use of undergraduate students as advisors. Proponents argue persuasively that the use of peers effectively augments the services delivered by existing staff. Opponents suggest that peer advising is fraught with insurmountable problems.

This webinar will take a close look at the advantages and disadvantages of the peer advising model. It is intended for those considering the implementation of a peer advising program, as well as those with existing peer programs seeking improvement and growth. Participants will gain the background necessary to determine the role that peers can play in building the campus advising system. They will also leave with strategies to help them implement a successful peer advising program at their own institution.
Objectives:
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using peers in academic advising
  • Take a close look at institutions that are successfully using undergraduates as advisors
  • Learn how to capitalize on the advantages and minimize the disadvantages of using peer advisors
  • Leave with strategies for implementing a successful peer advising program at their institution
