Overview:
A student veteran entering the first year of college is at a critical life marker and, much like any student, is dependent on a positive and successful experience to make graduation a likely outcome. It is especially important for colleges to recognize that student veterans bring their own set of characteristics that require special attention during the first year. This webinar will address ways to improve the graduation rate of your student veteran population with particular attention to their first year. Participants will review recommended General Education courses for the first year, courses that may be slightly different from what is recommended for civilian freshmen. The unique strengths that the student veteran brings to the college classroom (e.g. honor, loyalty, strong work ethic) will also be discussed, along with the positive effects these qualities can have on the civilian student population when properly harnessed.

Complete with statistical trends, retention data, GPAs, and graduation rates, this webinar will help guide course advisors through schedule creation and course selection with veteran success in mind, as well as making important initial recommendations such as full- or part-time status. Participants will also discuss the success of the GI Bill from the previous three wars and how the education of these veterans helped shape America and allowed for a significant drop in veteran suicide rates—a promising and inspiring nod to the importance of giving student veterans the support they need.
