StudentLingo Workshops

Student Feedback:
  • “Overall the workshop was very helpful, but the most important thing I learned today was how to pay attention and assess my study skills which helped me relax and relief the anxiety.” (sic)

  • “I rate her presentation as an excellent because the examples she gave were from students experiences and she also discussed the most important issues the student may face that hinder him/her from focusing and loosing their academic progress.” (sic)

  • “Overall all the strategies discussed in the [what is takes to be a successful student] workshop are very helpful, but the most helpful and beneficial strategy is cognitive restructuring, turning something into a positive by self-refection.”

  • “Thank you so much for your help! I was able to get a 91% on my test. I am so excited! I applied all the [test anxiety workshop] techniques especially telling myself that I was prepared for the test. I feel so much better, I will apply this to every test or project coming up. It feels so good to be able to remember everything I study. Thanks again.” (sic)

Institutional Feedback:
  • “I watched the “Choosing a Major” workshop and loved it! This is exactly what Karen, James, and I have been working on for the last year. Not having the technical know how, our presentation does not look or sound as great as this.”

  • “We love the videos! We have used them with students who are on probation/suspension. We have given them to our professors teaching our first year experience classes. The responses have been very positive. Please let us know if you develop any new titles.”

  • New England college of Business and Finance
In early 2011, New England College of Business and Finance (NECB) made the decision to create a mandatory first course for all incoming undergraduate students. NECB is an entirely online college, with a student body primarily consisting of working adults. The course is called INF101 Information Literacy for College Success. Week One is devoted to teaching the habits of successful online students. We use two StudentLingo workshops as pre-work for a Discussion Board assignment. The two we use are: Avoiding Procrastination and Your Learning Style.

Students spend Weeks 2 through 7 learning research skills using our eLibrary. Week 8 is devoted to Academic Integrity and Plagiarism. We use the Understanding and Avoiding Plagiarism workshop from StudentLingo as one of the lectures. This is a particularly good SL product.

This course and the SL videos have been very well received. Students attribute this course as being a key contributor to their success as an online student.

When I asked Jeff Cronin, our Librarian/Course Author/Faculty for his opinion of the SL workshop videos, he commented “I think the information provided by the StudentLingo tutorials is relevant and resonates well with nearly all of our students, particularly the students who have been out of school for some time and/or had less than satisfactory experiences in high school. I think they fit perfectly in the first week of the course and have added to the success of Info Lit.”

  • Arkansas Northeastern College
In the Fall of 2010 I became the Student Success Coordinator at Arkansas Northeastern College and began a series of workshops on various Student Success topics. I created a workshop menu, setup various times and spread the word around campus about the workshops. Unfortunately, I had very little participation. Around the same time my vice-president forwarded me an email about StudentLingo. I researched the program and watched several demonstrations. We decided to purchase access to all available workshops for the 2010-2011 academic year and again for the 2011-2012 year.

The feedback we have received from faculty, staff and students has been phenomenal! Faculty across all areas of our college use workshops as required, supplemental and extra credit in their courses. In my opinion the volume and usage is a great testimony due to the fact that no faculty or staff have been required to use the program. In the Fall of 2011 various workshops were incorporated in our first-year experience course.

In addition to the actual programs, the support staff at StudentLingo is top notch. Their response time is quick, accurate and always very friendly! If you have any questions feel free to contact me at lwells@smail.anc.edu.

I hope for your students you will choose to bring StudentLingo to your campus, I can assure you it will be an investment well made!

    Sincerely,

  • Southeastern Community College
With budget cuts in every area of Student Services, and more students in dire need of personal services, Student Lingo workshops have been our dream come true! At Southeastern Community College, we were able to use our Title III funding to purchase workshops to help meet our students’ needs. In my role as faculty, I can say that my students always gain a great deal from completing the Learning Styles Survey. It helps them understand how they learn material fastest and provides strategies to transform common lecture/textbook material into the style that works best for each of them. With less staff and increased student needs at every end of the spectrum, I simply cannot express how much these workshops have helped us, to help our students, in ways we could not otherwise do at his point in time. From note-taking skills, to stress management, to mastering an interview, our students now have access to necessary information at virtually any time they need or want it!

  • Foothill College
We have been using StudentLingo for over a year as an online resource for students as well as a teaching tool for our faculty. StudentLingo has been an excellent resource for students to gain a great deal of information prior to having appointments with counselors and advisors in the career and transfer center, financial aid office and the academic advising area. Faculty have used the podcasts in classes to discuss plagiarism, study tips, time management and how to be a successful student. We have received nothing but very positive feedback from students and faculty and highly recommend the program!

“The StudentLingo Workshops benefit our students and our campus in a variety of ways. They are a great tool for faculty and staff who would like to respond to common concerns raised by students at various skill levels. The Workshops also can be successfully incorporated into first year seminar classes as assignments or extra credit opportunities. In addition, they are useful tools for academically at-risk students, including those who are on academic probation and in danger of dismissal from the College. In my role as an academic counselor who meets with students on academic probation, I had students watch a StudentLingo Workshop and complete an action plan before follow-up meetings. This increased the effectiveness and efficiency of my one-on-one meetings with students because it encouraged self-reflection on topics such as study skills and time management. Overall, we have successfully used the StudentLingo videos with students enrolled in first-year seminar courses, students who received mid-semester warnings, students on academic probation, as well as the general student population. We have received a lot of positive feedback about the Workshops from our students, both in person and in anonymous survey results.”

Below is a comment from a student who completed the Study Tips and Note-Taking Workshop survey.

“I learned different ways and techniques that I could use in order to improve my study habits. What I found most helpful was that I should not just memorize information, but learn to apply it and put the information in my own words.”
