Violence Goes to College: Detecting and Preventing Avenger Violence

Overview

Startling disparities in enrollment and retention rates of Black and Hispanic males compared with female counterparts have many colleges searching for answers. Nevertheless, some minority male initiatives like the Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB) have numerous success stories to their credit. Come and get tools and gain insight into what it takes to keep minority males on the path towards graduation and beyond.

Questions that will be addressed during the presentation:

  • What are the root causes for the low student success and achievement of Black and Hispanic males?
  • What corrective actions must be taken by those in positions of leadership?
  • Does masculinity play a role in academic achievement?
  • Do bridge programs help African American and Hispanic males?
  • Despite all the rhetoric, what can faculty do to help change the reality?
