"The challenge is to motivate and engage a cohort of students who by age and life experience fall outside the norm public undergraduate education. The challenge is to equally educate and engage faculty and administrators in working with a cohort of students unlike most in their professional experience."

                                      ~ Webinar Presenter

Overview

This webinar will review the characteristics of returning veterans relative to general student population, i.e. age, military experience, education, diversity, training, other demographics.  Specifically, it will focus on programs and activities designed to welcome returning veterans into the university community and to maintain contact and support throughout their term of enrollment. The speakers will discuss designing veteran-specific orientation and First-Year Seminar programs.

Participants will be asked to consider the difficulties and obstacles commonly faced by student veterans, including those currently serving and those returning, and both university and community resources available to address these issues.  Finally, the speakers will discuss partnering with local and state agencies and military service organizations to enhance services to veterans on campus and in the community.

Objectives

    • Examine university administrative policies established to accommodate returning veterans, serving veterans, and veterans ordered to active duty mid-term.
    • Discuss the nature, characteristics and common (and some special) needs of veterans
    • Highlight key issues affecting the transition of returning veterans into the civilian environment, as well as the academic environment.
    • Participate in a dialogue on social, educational, family, financial, and psychological support resources, and how these resources interact to contribute to veterans’ personal and academic success.
    • Achieve a better understanding of factors contributing to successful transition from military to academic environment.

York has also worked with colleges across the state to implement veteran assistance programs, and MSU also helped convince the Montana Board of Regents to allow state campuses to participate in the Yellow Ribbon program connected to the Post 9/11 GI Bill. York also oversees Disability Services at MSU and is in a unique position for veterans that may need other assistance outside of their educational benefits.
