Supporting Military Family Members
Registration Fee: $345.00

This webinar will describe the challenges that some military family members face, from the day that their loved one enlists, to the day that they come home from deployment, while detailing the progression of these stressors. In addition, the presenter will discuss the different types of stressors that are experienced by national guard family members as opposed to active duty family members, including but not limited to, how these stressors impact different family members and how these stressors change given length of deployment and number of deployments. After reviewing the different stressors, the presenter will discuss on-campus support services for family members and discuss resiliency tests that the family can take at home to determine how well the family, as well as their veteran/guardsmen/service-member, is transitioning.

Assisting Parents of College Students by Leveraging Technology
Registration Fee: $345.00

How much financial aid did you award my daughter? Did you send that refund check to my son last week? Can you tell me how much I owe on my daughter’s student account, and by the way, what were her grades last semester?

Do these parent questions sound familiar to your student services staff? They were all too familiar for the University of Minnesota’s busy One Stop Student Services staff, and more often than not the information was restricted by FERPA data privacy laws. Now, thanks to a new online web tool, students can authorize their parents and other guests to view eight different areas of their online student record (including grades, student financial transactions, financial aid awards and status, enrollment information, holds, and housing and dining information). In addition to the online information, access is automatically granted to these same parents/guests to information via phone, e-mail, or walk-in service.

Partnering with Parents and Families for Student Success
Registration Fee: $345.00

Today’s students and their parents are more connected than ever before. Advances in technology mean that the occasional letter or weekly phone call has been replaced by near-constant communication. As a result, parents are more involved in the lives of their students, and therefore more involved in the life of the university. This involvement presents an opportunity for colleges and universities to further support the growth and development of their students, if it is appropriately managed.

Communicating With Parents: Developing A Relationship That Can Weather Any Storm
Registration Fee: $345.00

The last 10 years have shown a dramatic increase in parent involvement in higher education, and institutions have responded with robust support services to accompany this growth. The recent adoption of CAS standards for Parent & Family Programs is a clear example of this growth. At the heart of these services is our ability to communicate proactively and effectively with the parents of our students.

This program will highlight a model for developing a positive relationship with the parents of students at your institution. In doing so, you will promote a culture of trust, open dialogue, and the ability to weather the ups and downs of their students' experiences at your institution. In looking beyond the outdated marketing model of “showcase everything good about your university and nothing else”, new strategies for communication will reflect current trends in technology and public expectations for accountability and transparency.

Increasing Access & Success For Underrepresented Populations: The Importance Of Family Engagement
Registration Fee: $345.00

Many community colleges struggle with the challenge of educating students from low-income backgrounds. More specifically, community college administrators are attempting to enroll more low-income, Latino students while also increase persistence rates. We believe that connecting with families at an early stage and creating a continuum of services will increase the number of students who pursue a postsecondary education in addition to the number of adults who will enroll as non-traditional students.

Parents worry. Some are concerned about their children’s relationships, academic stand, or living arrangements. And some parents bring their concerns to bear when speaking with faculty members – sometimes at the top of their lungs. So what should you do? Brian Van Brunt, Ed.D., suggests that you see this type of situation as a “teachable moment” for the parent.

First-Generation Latino/a Persistence: Using Small Group Mentoring To Ease The Sophomore Slump
Registration Fee: $345.00

Available On-Demand
The national enrollment of first-generation college students increased 14 percent between 1988 and 2008 (Graves, 2009). Almost three-fourths of this increase in 2008 was due to enrollment by minorities (Yen, 2010). These statistics represent the nation’s rapidly changing demographics and specifically, the shift of the Latino/a population. Also in 2008, freshman enrollment jumped by 15 percent for the Latino/a population, a higher increase than any other minority or Caucasian group.

Inspired To Be First: Increasing The Success Rate Of African American & Latino/a First-Generation College Students
Registration Fee: $345.00

Available On-Demand
As educators at all levels seek to increase accessibility to higher education for students whose parents did not attend college, it is essential to seek out the strengths and assets first-generation students bring to the table. But institutions must not stop there. It is the responsibility of the educator, once these strengths are identified, to help students use them to their advantage. It is the social responsibility of the institution to design programs and initiatives around new understandings of the students they seek to serve.
