What are learning objects and digital libraries?

Learning objects are:

  • Easily accessible, digital educational resources that can be reused to support learning in many different contexts
  • They can include anything from individual graphics, animations, video sequences, simulations, educational games, or entire instructional sequences that teach about a specific topic.

 Digital libraries are:

  • Repositories for the best available digital resources available over the Internet.
  • They provide guided access for educators and students to learning objects or entire lessons and courses that can support learning goals.

Together, these technologies have the potential to revolutionize how people learn and how instruction is developed and delivered. But as with any technology, they are not a panacea for the problems by educators. This presentation will explore both the promises and limitations of these technologies, and suggest avenues for exploring their potential.

What will you learn?

    • What makes a digital resource a learning object
    • How digital libraries can support educators
    • What instructional approaches can be supported by learning objects
    • Costs associated with using and developing learning objects
    • An overview of metadata and its uses
    • Strategies for developing learning objects
    • The copyright issue
    • Limitations to the impact of digital resources (Hint: they won’t replace universities)
    • Recommendations for a future that includes learning objects and digital libraries

Who should attend?

  • Distance/Online Learning Administrators
  • Faculty and Instructors (online and classroom)
  • Instructional Designers
  • Presidents, Vice Presidents, Deans
  • Anyone interested in the impacts of Internet on education

How do these on-demand trainings work?

1.  We will send you a link to the recording, which is good indefinitely.

2.  You can distribute this link to your entire faculty and staff via email.

3.  They can watch this presentation from any computer that has Internet and speakers.

How would I use it?

You can distribute the links any way you like.   Here are some ideas:

  • Distribute all links to faculty and staff so they can watch these presentations anytime, anywhere and have a discussion board for each topic
  • Distribute one link to all faculty and staff at the beginning of each month during the academic year and plan a discussion session at the end of each month for faculty and staff to get together and plan how they will implement the strategies presented
  • Plan a day and time to show each webinar in a large classroom and invite all faculty and staff to attend - debrief immediately following the presentation
  • Develop a professional development program around these topics with monthly themes and recognize the staff member that implements the best idea related to the theme
  • Utilize these topics to develop cross functional and cross discipline teams to foster collegiality
  • Utilize these presentations as part of your new employee training program
