Identifying & Supporting Students In Distress: An Innovative Approach

Overview:
Many colleges and universities are taking a close look at the way they react to students in distress. By utilizing new ways of identifying students heading towards a crisis point and appropriately connecting these students to campus resources, these institutions are taking a proactive stance and helping students avoid disaster.

This webinar will investigate an effective, comprehensive, and nationally recognized support program at the University of Rochester--the CARE Network. This network, through CARE reports, phone conversations, and in-person visits, works closely with the Assistant Director for Student Support Services. The identification process involves members all over campus, including faculty, staff, students, and parents. Participants will review the structure of the program, as well as the specific role of each campus member in identifying a student in distress or heading towards distress. They will also receive a thorough overview of the University of Rochester’s strategies, and in particular, survey results from CARE reporters and students identified through this innovative process.

  • Compare the University of Rochester’s CARE Network with similar programs available at their college or university and discuss similarities and differences
  • Identify roadblocks associated with recognizing and triaging college students in or heading toward distress
